EMERGENCY FIRE ESCAPE LADDERS
EMERGENCY FIRE ESCAPE LADDERS
Every family should have an emergency escape ladder.
Every family should have a plan in place to evacuate in the case of fire. While smoke detectors and heat alarms may alert you to the fire, you may still need a safe method of escape from a burning structure. If you don’t live in a home or building with a fixed fire escape you need to consider how you would escape a fire.
The most common path that a fire takes is also the path that people use to exit the upper floors of a building - the stairs. Since most homes and many offices have only a single staircase more people are keeping emergency escape ladders stored in the upper floors of their home and offices.
How To Use Your Portable Emergency Escape Ladder
While these ladders are portable, it’s best to store the escape ladder near the window you are going to use. When you need to use the ladder, 1) Close the doors to the room before opening the escape window to avoid intensifying the fire. 2) Hook the top portion of the escape ladder over the windowsill and drop the rest out the window. 3) When descending the ladder, keep your body close to the ladder to maximize stability.
Make sure that the ladder your purchase will fit the specific window for which it’s intended and read all the instruction information that comes with the product. Everyone in the family, especially children, should be familiar with how to us the ladder.
Note: If the ladder is for a child’s room, have the child practice putting the ladder out the window. Then have them practice climbing out, but do this from a first floor window. Do this as part of a family fire drill. When used in conjunction with smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, and as part of an overall fire-escape plan, the EL52-2 is an effective last-resort tool to help you and your family safely exit a dangerous situation.
