Ionization Smoke Alarms - This type of alarm uses a small amount of radioactive material to ionize air in the sensing chamber. As a result, the air chamber becomes conductive permitting current to flow between two charged electrodes. When smoke particles enter the chamber, the conductivity of the chamber air decreases. When this reduction in conductivity is reduced to a predetermined level, the alarm is set off. Most smoke alarms in use are of this type. Note: Ionization alarms are the fastest type to respond to flaming fires and are the lowest cost most commonly sold type of smoke alarm.

Photoelectric Smoke Alarms - A photoelectric type smoke alarm consists of a light emitting diode and a light sensitive sensor in the sensing chamber. The presence of suspended smoke particles in the chamber scatters the light beam. This scattered light is detected and sets off the alarm. Note: Photoelectric alarms are the fastest type to respond to slow smoldering fires and white or gray smoke. These alarms are less prone to nuisance alarms from such things as cooking fumes.

Dual Sensor
Dual photoelectric and ionization smoke alarms have sensing technologies for optimal sensing of smoke particles produced in both flaming and smoldering fires.
Wire-In
Hardwire smoke alarm units are powered by wiring the alarm directly into a household's AC power supply at a junction box. Wire in type smoke alarms are permanently installed to prevent tampering.
Battery Operated
Standard and 10 Year Lithium 9 Volt and AA battery operated smoke alarms are easier to install and can be placed anywhere.
Wireless
Kidde Wireless Smoke Alarms provide the earliest warning to fire by linking together so that when one alarm detects smoke, it will trigger all others to sound, giving a family more time to escape.
Smoke Alarm Accessories
Alarm Accessories for Smoke detectors and alarms are valuable auxiliary relays and adapters designed to enhance the functionality of your fire safety system.
